AU EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE

ADDIS ABABA, The African Union (AU) is keen to implement the Belt and Road Initiative for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) and increase investments in infrastructural development to boost intra-African trade and socio-economic development of the continent.

According to a statement issued by the AU Commission here Wednesday, the initiative is viewed as a new way by China to enhance development aimed at expanding links between Asia, Africa and Europe through infrastructure investment in rail, road and port networks.

The Commission said it would be seeking enhanced co-operation and mutually beneficial development under the China-Africa development programme.

The AU is keen to implement the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) and increase investments in infrastructural development to boost intra-African trade and socio-economic development of the continent.

The Belt and Road Initiative covers 60 countries stretching from the South Pacific through East, Southeast, South and Central Asia to the Middle East, Africa and Europe.
