Team Nigeria Wins Three Gold Medals in Gaborone

Team Nigeria has bagged three gold medals in the ongoing 2nd edition of the African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana. The African edition of the Youth Olympics which kicked off last Thursday is to be rounded off on Saturday, May 31st, 2014. The country’s contingent started impressively with football when Team Nigeria’s U- 15 football team defeated host 2-0 in Friday’s match before following it up with a goalless draw against Mali the following day

In weightlifting, Nigeria’s Chika Joy Amalaha set a new African record in the girls’ 58kg category when she lifted 87kg in the snatch event to pick the gold. She also created a new African record, some minutes later, in the clean and jack category when she lifted 102kg.

Emmanuel Inemo Appah continued from where Amalaha stopped as he also won the second gold for Nigeria in the boys’ 56kg event. Nigeria’s representatives in the Badminton team event defeated Egypt 3-0 and followed it up with another 3-1 impressive victory over South Africa to win the gold medal. Nigeria had also spanked host Botswana 5-0 and Mauritania 3-0 in the quarter finals stage to move to the semi-finals of the event.

Team Nigeria also qualified for the final of the boys’ table tennis event decided late last night while the girls won the bronze medal of the girls’ event.

In Judo Nigeria’s girls bowed out in the semi-finals in the 55-66kg category while the boys lost out in the first round. However, the story of the fairytale run was cut short in rowing as Team Nigeria’s girls were disqualified in the single sculls event. Nigerian boys qualified for final B. Nigerian boys defeated host Botswana 3-1 to kick-start the volleyball event on a bright note.
