Bih, Bocra Celebrate Girls in ICT

Individuals need to be aligned to the technological changes so that they can continue to play their professional role in the communal cyber space.

Board chairperson of Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited, Ms Daphne Matlakala at the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) day in Gaborone.

Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH) in conjunction with Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) celebrated girls in ICT. Ms Matlakala said ICT had brought efficiency in the way business was transacted.

She applauded efforts made by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to bridge the gender-based digital divide by aocating for the rights of girl child in cyber space.

Ms Matlakala stated that girls needed to be empowered and encouraged to study and take up careers which could enrich their potential and creativity as leaders, innovators and investors. She added that having knowledge and understanding of ICT was imperative for everyone who had a desire to succeed in life.

Ms Matlakala said transformational power of ICT also attracted the attention of government, civic society and international agencies who were aocating for ICT to be availed to everyone regardless of their economic, social and cultural status.

The United Nations has also declared access of ICT as a priority that needed to be addressed by its member state, she said.

“The ITU speaks very lively of the potential power of ICT to promote gender equality and empower women and marginalised groups through their inclusion in decision making process,” she said.

For his part, an official of BOCRA, Mr Aron Nyeletsi said the day was a special one as it recognized the roles that ICTs could play in enhancing the quality of the lives of a young woman and the girl child.

He said the commemoration was meant to give girls and young women an opportunity to interact with ICT in different ways, with the sole purpose of encouraging them to consider a future in the ICT sector.
