| April 27, 2015

There were first leg aantages for Botswana, Ghana and Rwanda during the weekend matches of the first round of the qualifiers for the African U-23 Championship Senegal 2015.

The trio made the most of playing at home Botswana humbled Kenya 3-0, Ghana downed Liberia 2-0 whilst Rwanda also saw off Somalia 2-0.

The trio remains on course in the journey for the places at the continental qualifier for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games ahead the second leg matches in fortnight.

A goal in each half from Dauda Mohamed and Kennedy Ashia on Sunday were enough to give Ghana’s Black Meteors a commanding lead over visiting Liberia in the northern city of Tamale. Mohamed broke the deadlock on 28 minutes before Ashia sealed victory with a strike on 65 minutes.

On Saturday, Yannick Mukunzi and Kevin Muhire were on target as Rwanda registered a comfortable 2-0 win over Somalia at the Amahoro Stadium.

Mukunzi scored a 17th minute header after connecting a cross from left back Janvier Mutijima to slot the opener past Somalia goalkeeper Mustaf Khalib Hussein.

Substitute Kevin Muhire who came off the bench replacing Bon Fils Kabanda with ten minutes to go scored a brilliant goal in added-on after curving a 40-metre shot into the back of the net, a feat which lifted the Amavubi fans.

In Lobatse on Friday, a brace from striker Omaatla Kebatho and the other from Kabelo Seakanyeng was all the Zebras needed to send the Kenyans packing empty back to their base.

The second leg matches will take place in a fortnight.
