Butler Bets On Zebras

| June 11, 2015

Coach Peter Butler has expressed satisfaction with his team’s preparations ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda.

The Zebras have a date with The Cranes on Saturday June 13 after a difficult campaign in the recent COSAFA Senior Championships where they finished in fourth place.

The match will be played at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. In a press conference on June 9, Butler expressed trust on the boys, saying they would take the challenge to their opponents.

“We obviously went into COSAFA with a mindset to prepare for this game and the CHAN competition,” said Butler. The coach said he was impressed with the young players’ performance during the COSAFA championships.

He said the tournament gave players a platform to prove themselves in the senior team which they did. Butler said the tournament afforded his young players the feel of what the senior national team was about.

He urged supporters to be patient with the young boys and support them as they need to be nurtured. Butler, who explained that Uganda was a g, physical and a powerful team, said he would use two different game plans.

He said they would employ a defensive strategy and look to catch their opponents on the break. He further said all they need was to play with a positive mind.

Butler noted that the likes of Mpho Kgaswane, Onkabetse Makgantai and Hendrick Moyo bring a fresh perspective to the team. He described Moyo as a kid with a big heart.

Defensively, he said they brought in players such as Edwin Olerile who was not just a defender, but can attack from the back using the flanks. He said if they had to change their game plan, they have capable players such as Ofentse Nato and others who were good in defence.

Botswana is ranked at number 111 while Uganda is ranked 71 in the world FIFA rankings.
