North West District Council (NWDC) has bought a boat for Chanoga residents to venture into a sustainable and viable income generating programme.

The boat was bought at the tune of P104 000 through Youth Development Fund Programme (YDF), which is an empowerment programme aimed at promoting active participation of youth in the socio-economic development of the country.

The boat was handed over to the department of social and community development office to be transported to Chanoga where two youths were identified to operate it as water transport.

The chief finance and development planning officer, Ms Charity Phuthego, explained that the boat was bought after the Chanoga community made a request to President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama during a kgotla meeting.

She said the community requested a boat that they could operate to generate income towards development of their village. Ms Phuthego said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development managed to secure some funds from their savings and bought the boat from Aliboats Company.

Speaking during the hand over the council secretary, Mr Mzondik Moswete urged social workers to equip the two youths with basic skills to ensure the project produces the expected results.

He said they should be taught how to manage the boat and ensure that it would be used for the right purposes. “It should not be used for fishing.

The beneficiaries should take this as a precious gift and start a sustainable business which would improve their livelihood and of the communities,” he added.

Mr Moswete also noted that the council would not maintain the boat and aised them to be committed towards the project and generate income so that they could be able to service the boat.

For her part, Chief Social Community and Development Officer, Ms Letang Mbaakanyi assured the council leadership who graced the occasion that they would use it on daily basis to generate income and make ends meet.
