Employment Nature Causes Disparities

| April 14, 2015

The disparity in salaries between employees of Ministry of Agriculture and Statistics Botswana conducting the agricultural census emanates from the nature of their employment, the acting Minister of Agriculture Mr Patrick Ralotsia has said.

Responding to a question from Ghanzi North MP, Mr Noah Salakae, the minister said the officers were not under Statistics Botswana but employed by their original employees.

MP Salakae had asked the minister to explain the salary disparities between the employees of the two organisations although they were undertaking a similar exercise with similar duties.

He said during the 1994 census, there were disparities hence the results were not validated. MP Salakae asked the minister if history would not repeat itself as there are some disgruntled employees which may result with low productivity.

He further asked if the minister would consider sourcing funds elsewhere to address this disparity. Minister Ralotsia said he was aware of the disparities but said they were brought by conditions of service as some are government employees while Statistics Botswana is a parastatal.

He said the agricultural ministry conducts annual surveys while census are held every 10 years with the assistance of Statistics Botswana.
