Fire Extinguisher Explosion Kills Man

| May 12, 2015

A middle-aged man died following explosion of a fire extinguisher in Maun on Monday (May 11) morning.

The incident took place at the Botswana Telecommunication Corporation (BTC) premises, Assistant Superintendent Borefeletse Papane confirmed in an interview.

He said the deceased together with his two colleagues from the Gaborone-based Fire Suppression and Electrical Company were in Maun to service BTC fire extinguishers.

The deceased reportedly left others at the back of the BTC building to fill one of the fire extinguishers, but his action was followed by a huge blast.

Assistant Superintendent said the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood behind the company car. He said they were still trying to establish what could have caused the explosion.

He also cautioned employees to be vigilant when using fire extinguishers since they were risky devices. One of the deceased’ colleagues, Mr Dennis Madiege said the deceased, who worked as a technician, joined the company in 2013.

He suspected that the fire extinguisher could have had low pressure and was over filled hence the explosion.
