GU Sweep Mascom Awards

GU beat their arch-rivals Township Rollers 2-1 in a pulsating final at the National Stadium in April to win the competition for a record second time.

At the awards ceremony in Gaborone, Moyagoleele further underlined their supremacy in the competition by winning all the awards on offer.

Phoko scooped the Number One Player (Player of the Tournament) as well as the Number One Safe Hands (Best Goalkeeper) Awards.

That the young goal keeper was going to win was obvious considering how observers praised him in the media and football arenas he produced some exceptional performances which undeniably helped GU win the competition.

The Reds were particularly indebted to Phoko’s brilliance in the final. He pulled a string of top-class saves to deny the formidable Rollers. He beat off tight competition from Alphonse Modisaotsile and Segolame Boy for the Player of the Tournament Award, which carried a P50, 000 prize.

He also saw off competition from Rollers goalkeepe,r Noah Maposa, and Nico United’s Edwin Mokibe for the Best Goalkeeper Award, which carried a P25, 000 Prize.

Striker Benson Shilongo, who has been a revelation for GU, won the Number One Yellow-Boot (Top Goal scorer) Award. He scored five goals in the competition including the winning goal in the final. The award carried P30, 000 prize monies.

Coach Rahman Gumbo understandably won the Number One Coach award ahead of Madinda Ndlovu and Letang Kgwengwenyane. Joshua Bondo was elected as the Number One Referee, while Kitso Sibanda bagged the Number One Assistant Referee Award.

GU was also handed the P1 million first prize cheque for winning the competition.

Botswana Premier League (BPL) chairman, Arnold Somolekae, thanked Mascom Wireless for having been the sponsor of the Top 8 Competition for the past four years. The league and Mascom have two further years on their agreement. He said the competition had continued to improve since its inception.

“I believe you will accept that during the last edition, we raised the bar. Congratulations must seriously go to Gaborone United for winning the Mascom Top 8. You thoroughly deserved the achievement, and let me not shy away to say this comes from your organised administration,” Somolekae said.

Mascom Wireless chief executive officer Mr Jose Couceiro was also happy with their relationship with BPL. “Over the last four years we have continued to grow the Mascom Top 8 brand and found new ways of interacting with the football community in Botswana. This relationship works,” he said.

He said the competition this season was even more memorable because the two biggest rivals in the country faced each other in the final.

The Awards Ceremony was graced by the minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Thapelo Olopeng and the minister of Transport and Communications Tshenolo Mabeo.
