Hail Top 8 Champions!

| April 20, 2015

Gaborone United (GU) are the Mascom Top 8 champions.

The Money Machine pocketed P1 million after defeating cross-town rivals Township Rollers in a final played in Gaborone on Saturday evening (April 18). The victory could be deemed as sweet revenge of the 4-1 defeat that GU suffered at the hands of Rollers in the Coca-Cola cup final 22 years ago.

The Saturday game started with high tempo, but with few clear-cut scoring opportunities. Both teams had resorted to a high cautious approach in the first half.

In the 26th minute, Popa won a free kick on the ark of the box, but GU goalkeeper, Goitseone Phoko denied them a goal. Sensing that Rollers were up to upset his side, GU coach, Rahman Gumbo did not waste time in the 41st minute and replaced Tendai Nyamadzawo with the ever-hard working Ntesang ‘Mirror’ Simanyana.

The game went into a recess with the scoreboard reading 0-0, but the game opened up in the second half. In the 61st minute, Kobamelo ‘Swere’ Kebaikanye put Township Rollers in front with a beauty after receiving a telling cross from Simisani Mathumo.

The goal scorer was immediately replaced by Jerome Ramatlhakwana. Sooner after Swere was taken off, the Money Machine re-grouped becoming relentless in the attack and their efforts were rewarded with a Simanyana goal, after receiving a beautiful pass from Willie Gaotewe.

Fifteen minutes before full-time, Obonye Moswate was penalised for a foul on Kgololo Leteane inside the box and the Namibian international, Benson Shilongo, converted the spot kick to take his tally to five thus making him the tournament top goal scorer.

In the last quarter of the game, Rollers coach, Madinda Ndlovu introduced Maano Ditshupo for Dirang Moloi in an attempt to step up the offensive but the Money Machine remained resolute at the back.

And GU keeper, Phoko displayed some man-of-the match performance to deny them any goal. In a post-match interview, Ndlovu praised his boys for the gallant fight. However, Madinda was against the referee’s decision to award GU a spot kick.

Gumbo praised his players saying they deserved the trophy, adding he managed to frustrate Rollers in the midfield.
