IKS Key to Sustainable Development

| April 13, 2015

Government has been challenged to incorporate Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) into its National Development Plan to help communities benefit from traditional knowledge.

Deliberating at a one-day IKS workshop organised by the Botswana Innovation Hub in collaboration with the University of Botswana held at Yarona Lodge in Mogoditshane recently, Dr Lapologang Magole felt the absence of IKS in the country’s development plan highlighted lack of recognition of such by the government.

She said recognition of indigenous or traditional knowledge can contribute immensely to the development of the country as they can help in the country’s sustainable development.

Dr Magole stated that communities were ready to have IKS incorporated in government plans as it would ensure that their work gets recognition and funding.

He challenged the government for allegedly encouraging the occurrence of poverty by leaving IKS behind adding that it was important that IKS issues were incorporated to ensure that they develop. Traditional knowledge, she said has its own richness and is the key to sustainable development.

She pointed out that programmes earmarked for uplifting people from poverty do not provide them with a dignified life or choice on how they could live their lives, adding that recognition of traditional knowledge can give them chance to pursue what they are best at.

Contributing, Mr Oabona Monngakgotla of Research Science and Technology called for a holistic approach towards addressing issues of IKS. Mr Monngakgotla aised on the importance of establishing adhoc structures that might coordinate things as they come in, and strategies on what best could be done in the meantime as the policy might take time.

Presenting on Legal Frameworks towards protection of IKS in Botswana, Mr Timothy Moalusi said protection of traditional knowledge gives owner exclusive right to prevent third parties without consent to use any related product for commercial purposes.
