Judo Championships Successful

Botswana Judo Federation held a successful national championships at Moselewapula Junior School in Gaborone on Saturday (May 16).

The one-day competition, which is the biggest event in the judo calendar, pitted players from six clubs affiliated to the federation. These included Botsalano Primary School, Masa Primary School, Lesedi Primary School, Phillip Moshotle Primary School, SSKB, and Re Ba Bona Ha.

They competed in junior and senior age categories for both male and female genders. The event dished a lot of exciting contests, which besides from thrilling spectators, showcased the potential from players.

Lesego Modisa was crowned the national champion in the senior men over 100kg division, while Bongani Leteane won the title for the men’s under 90kg division. Marks Monageng won the men under-66kg division, while Gavin Mogopa won the men’s under 55kg division.

The title for the senior girls under 73kg division was won by Tlaleng Qekii, while Neo Kapeko won the senior girls under 52kg division. Other winners included Thato Lebang (U-20 men’s U-73kg), Gavin Mogopa (U-20 men’s U-55kg), and Min Young Kim (Girls U-63kg).

Tournament director, Ishmael Thaga said the event was a great success even though the number of participating players had slightly dropped. “The level of competition from the players was very good.

We gave everyone an opportunity to come and compete to be part of the team which we are going to select to represent us at the South Africa Open International Championships in Stellenbosch,” Thaga said. He said the team would be named in a few days’ time.
