´╗┐Kebatshele Wins Lobatse Marathon

Sherperd Kebatshele is winner of the 21 km Lobatse marathon.

Kebatshele beat a team comprising of some of the most recognised track stars, among them veteran runner, Kaelo Mosalagae, to clinch the tightly contested 21 km race in 106.34 minutes.

The 800m runner had to dash fast to beat Mosalagae and Rapula Diphoko of Lefika Athletics Club who came in second and third, clocking 106.37 minutes and 106.45 minutes respectively. The men’s race was tightly contested race with Kebatshele just thrashing his closet rival by a mere three seconds.

The women on one hand kept the same momentum as Onneile Dintwe clocked 122:01 minutes also beating her closet rival Gaone Bathoen by a mere three seconds who clocked 122:04 and Gaborone Runners Club Joyce Tau came in third clocking 122:32 minutes.

In a side interview with Kebatshele, he said he was content with all what was done to make the marathon a success. He appreciated Lobatse landscape saying the chosen route gave enhanced his energies since he is preparing himself for a major upcoming unnamed event.

Both the winners of the men and women’s 21km marathon walked away with P10 000 cash prizes while their runners up and second runner up got P7 500 and P5 000 respectively by the courtesy of Letshego Financial Services and trophies sponsored by Robot Auto.

In other results, the 10km marathon sponsored by Master Print at P 3 000 for first runners, P 2 500 second runners and P 2000 for third runners saw Sylvester Koko won the men’s 10km after he clocked 33:52 minutes while his second runner up Mphoyamodimo Kehakgametse clocked 33:59 and BDF Athletic Club Unaswi Dambe came in third at 34:80 minutes.

The women’s 10km marathon was won by Botho Marope followed by Mantshapelo Badumetse from BDF Athletic team and Gorata Mphinyane.

In the corporate team marathon Flotek set a brilliant performance as they won the marathon and got away with cash prize of P1 500 after beating Gaborone Sun as the second runner ups who pocketed P1 250 and Botswana Railways settling for the third position and got away with P1 000.

The 5 km marathon men’s category was won by Boitumelo Masilo followed by Otshegeditse Ramankhi and Ernest Bolokang while in women’s category Saone Moilwa emerged the winner followed by Ofentse Molaodi and Ontefetse Kgatlhegang.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, Lobatse Council Town Clerk Gabatlotlane Sekwakwa extended a warm gratitude to all sponsors and the participants who made the day a success.

She said Lobatse Council embraced the Vision 2016 pillar of being a compassionate and caring nation through diverting the marathon proceeds to build a house for an identified less privileged family in their locality.

However, Sekwakwa decried lack of sponsors in their event and called for all corporate sectors to support their initiatives to move Botswana forward in uplifting the citizens’ livelihoods as well as improving the economic status of Lobatse town.

The marathon was mainly sponsored by Master Print in collaboration with Lobatse Council and supported by Cumberland Hotel, Letshego Financial Services, Cally Clothing and Robot Auto.
