Kids Academy Cleans Kanye

| June 9, 2015

A group of pupils comprising of boy scouts and girl guides from Kids Academy English Medium school in Kanye embarked on a clean-up campaign of the village recently.

The pupils expressed dismay at the way the village was dirty, with litter all over the place. The campaign was meant to encourage the community to keep their environment clean.

The theme of the day was “we are bitter about litter”. The exercise started at BG filing station along the road towards Mongala Mall.

In an interview after the campaign scout master, Mr Brian Maphosa , said the school was driven by the desire to serve Kanye community and to enhance good relationship with the community by cleaning the village, noting that the school was part of the community.

Mr Maphosa said the campaign took a unique and light-hearted approach, linking littering with wrongdoing. He said the ultimate goal of the campaign was to change mindset of those who litter.

“Most of the time litter invites more litter. Once litter has accumulated along a road, around barber shops, near shops, people are more likely to keep littering in that location. Sometimes it is simply a matter of laziness”, he said. He said If there was no garbage or recycling container nearby, some people would just throw litter at a spot that was convenient to them.

“Human beings have adapted to this world and transformed the face of this planet in some miraculous ways, but some of the negative impacts have been caused by us,” he said.

He said it was about everyone taking responsibility individuals, local authorities, government and multi-national companies to change the way people think and act about littering.

“We all love something about where we live and this campaign is about everyone working together to make change happen”, he said.

He further said the pupils enjoyed exercise and seeing the environment being clean after the exercise.
