| May 22, 2015

Lady Khama Charitable Trust (LKCT) is to host the third Lady Khama Diamond horse derby on Saturday (May 23) at the agricultural show grounds in Gaborone.

“LKCT in partnership with the Golden Horse Riding Club and Horse Endurance Relay brings the most exclusive family event of the year, the bush event, with a bit of panache has something for everyone whilst celebrating Botswana most elite sport” said chairperson of LKCT Dale Ter Haar.

Haar said the purpose of the trust was to help improve lives of vulnerable women and children in Botswana. He further said the trust aimed at achieving this through charitable and educational activities and by raising and investing funds to support the mission.

He said the purpose of the event was to raise funds then identify charity beneficiaries that needed the funding and donate to them. Since inception of the trust, Ter Haar said they had managed to raise funds amounting to about P12 million and donating P1 million a year.

He credited former Minister of Agriculture Christiaan De Graaff who organised the Ghanzi Horse Endurance Relay (GHER). GHER came up with the unique idea of hosting a horse relay from Ghanzi to Gaborone with the interest of raising funds for LKCT initiatives, the race is now on its 6th year and has raised over P5-million for the trust.

Ter Haar said the horse race will be graced by about 27 horses with Tswana and Thoroughbred horses. The race will be categorised in four races, the 600m, 1000m, 1200m and the biggest of the day 2000m.

The most unique thing about this event and possibly the first of its kind in Botswana is that, people will be allowed to bet, the betting will be done in two ways under individual betting and accumulative betting, he said.

He said apart from the horse racing there will be a tranquil wine garden full of the best wines available for wine tasting, noting that there will be live entertainment, fashion, a visual arts exhibition and a kids park for children entertainment.

The trust focuses on the disaantaged and does so by supporting and initiating charitable undertakings, particularly targeting gender-based organisations and those which assist disaantaged children. President Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama was the founding chairman of the trust, and has since assumed the role of patron.
