Local Comedians Prove Mettle

| June 9, 2015

There has been always that impression that Botswana comedians are nothing near to their South African counterparts, but at the ‘Strictly Come Laughing’ comedy show was a different story.

Local comics in Oefile “Mawee” Mokgware and Phenyo “The Master” Phaladi were outstanding in a show in which they were pitted with South Africa’s heavy weights, the likes of Kagiso Lediga, David Kibuuka and Tats Nkonzo.

The two were on fire they had this time around brought fresh material which saw the audience tickled throughout the time they were on stage.

First on stage was Mawee who set the pace right away with hilarious jokes and not even a single passed without the audience laughing.

He amused everyone when he cracked a joke about BTV people and shortage of water in the country, the joke went like “Batho ba BTV ke bone ba fetsang metsi mo Botswana ka gore nako le nako ba nna bare re pota ka fa re nwa metsi.”

Mawee, the Gabane born comedians displayed immense talent and growth in his comedy since he started in 2012 with President’s Day Celebration competitions.

His counterpart Phenyo, also did not want to be left behind, he cracked funny jokes with his material ranging from issues of day to day life to current issues making headlines such as the Sepp Blatter issue and South Africa’s World Cup 2010 saga.

It is reported that Phenyo recently graced a monthly event in South Africa themed ‘Tips and Friends’ that is held every last Friday of the month at Taliban in Ga Rankuwa where he got a standing ovation at the end of his performance with the audience requesting that he should be brought back in future events.

Although South African visitors were also good, Mawee and Phenyo seemed to have impressed the audience more.

With David Kibuuka, people hardly laughed at his jokes, probably because he used English language and somehow the jokes were hard to get.

Kagiso Lediga and Tats Nkonzo also did not disappoint as people laughed at most of their jokes.
