Netball Team Readies for Africa Champs

The national netball senior team will this weekend (May 2-3) go on camp in preparation for the Africa Netball Championships billed for Namibia on June 28 to July 5.

The team has roped in a good number of young and promising players who competed in the 2012 African Youth Games (AYG) in Gaborone.

One fresh player to watch is AYG vice-captain Sarona Hans who played a major role in the attainment of their bronze medal.

Hans together with her AYG co defender Letang Mogotlhwane just jetted in from Singapore where they were attached to play in different clubs in the Singapore Netball Super League. Other AYG young diamonds thrown on camp are Pearl Maribe, Kagiso Mothuba, Roseline Swartz, Aobakwe Mosekiwa, Winnie Hill and Onalenna Theetso

A g foundation still stands in the team from experienced and seasoned national team players in the likes of Captain Portia Rasekhumba, Tumisang Bagidi, Hildah Binang Gosego Tsele, Ntebogang Motlakaloso and Francinah Eyman.

The 20 women squad further incorporated seasoned league players from different teams across the country amongst them Violet Oneile, Madonna Malikongwa, Ndabaka Dumuwa, Chedza Matshaba and Fatima Bino.

In an interview, Botswana Netball Association (BONA) Vice president events and projects Kelebogile Maplanka said the team is currently under the tutelage of international coach and umpire Abednico Chetelo and former national team player Kagisano Mawela.She stated that due to the suspension of the league, players are given a training program to follow when they are not on national camp.

Maplanka said the technical team expects the athletes to follow the program as they train with their respective clubs so as to stay fit.S

he highlighted that the weekend camp will be the second following the first one on April 17-19 with more camps still to follow until June.
