| April 7, 2015

New Era College has introduced two new degree programmes to respond to the skills shortage in Botswana’s economy.

The degree programmes were recently approved by the Botswana Qualification Authority (BQA) and will start in JulyAugust 2015 semester. Addressing the media at the New Era College recently, the curriculum coordinator, Dr Augustins Utlwang, said the courses went through evaluation for approval.

“The two flagship programmes being launched by the college are bachelors of engineering in electrical and electronics, as well as telecommunications,” he said. Dr Utlwang said the programmes would run for 10 semesters, each semester having five or more modules.

He said students to be enrolled for the programmes should have strength in Science, Mathematics and English. Executive Director of New Era Ms Galaletsang Maakwe said the college would also offer programmes on part-time basis.

She said it would be the same programmes approved by (BQA) and currently taught to full time students. “These studies will provide opportunity for people in the industry, ordinary members of the public as well as those who qualify but without sponsorship to get higher qualification, “she said.

She stated that the college would also embark on an expanded training programme, offering short courses ranging from one week to six months. “These short courses will address challenges relating to skill gaps existing in the labour market and in Botswana in general,” said Ms Maakwe.

Ms Maakwe indicated that the college has another project which included organising and running seminars, conferences and workshops on topical issues both locally and globally.

“These should take New Era closer to the people as we march into the next phase of the institution’s delivery system,” she said.
