Nijel, Makwala in Diamond League Action

Nijel Amos will compete at the Diamond League this Saturday (May 30).

Amos clocked 45.81 seconds to win the 400m race at the Sports View international meet in Gaborone last weekend. Prior to that, he competed at the South Africa Championships where he finished in position six in 400m.

Amos said he used the two races to prepare his speed, adding that he was now ready to conquer the world. The recently crowned Botswana National Sport Council (BNSC) Sports Person of the Year said he was cognisant of new challenges in the new season.

“All I am doing now is rolling with the wheel trying to be consistent like last year, and currently my main target is the World Championships,” he said. It remains to be seen if he can set a new world record. His track nemesis David Rudisha is the current holder with 1:40.91.

The 800m start list is made up of Amos, Harun Abda, Charles Jock,Mahammed both from USA Aman of Ethiopia, Ferguson Rotich Cheruiyot,Job Kinyor,Alfred Kipketer OF Kenya ,Poland will be represented by Adam Kszczot,Taoufik Makhloufi from Algeria and Andre Olivier from South Africa.

African 400m record holder Isaac Makwala will also compete at the same meet after finishing on position six in the last IAAF Diamond League-Shanghai meet. He faces a stiff competition from LaShawn Merritt of USA,and the 2012,400 metres Olympic gold medallist Kirani James of Grenada.

Other athletes who are on the start list are Christopher Brown of Bahamas,Abdalleleh Haroun of Qatar, Pavel Maslak of Czech Republic, Youssef Ahmed Masrahi of Saudi Arabia, while USA will be represented by Tony Mcquay and Lashawn Merrit.

Makwala told BOPA that he has prepared well for the race, and was confident of improving from his previous race and ultimately record sub 45 seconds.
