No ‘Bekere’ for Magosi

| April 29, 2015

Mochudi Centre Chiefs are only a victory away from being crowned the 201415 be Mobile Premier League champions.

However, they would have to wait for a while for the trophy even if they emerge victorious against FC Satmos this weekend.

Magosi already have one hand on the trophy, or ‘bekere’ in the Kgatleng dialect, given that they are at the summit of the log with 63 points and a victory this weekend would see them amassing 66 ponits..

The norm has been that, in a deciding game like this one, both the sponsors and Botswana Premier League (BPL) will parade the lucrative trophy and the medals and if that team wins, they get the trophy.

BPL chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi confirmed to BOPA that his office was aware that should Centre Chiefs win against Satmos, automatically they would have won the league. He said they had already raised the issue with the sponsor and they were also preparing themselves for the ceremonial hand over.

An official announcement will be made next week. “Let us not mix issues here. It is not yet official that Centre Chiefs have won the league. It will only be official on Saturday after the game and even if they win, the trophy will not be handed over to them on Saturday,” said Mamelodi.

He said the fixtures did not catch his office nor the sponsor ‘off-guard’ adding that just across the border, Kaizer Chiefs won the trophy last week, but they would be handed the trophy on May 9 because the Premier Soccer League and their sponsor were still making necessary arrangements.

Mamelodi further said BPL and sponsors wanted to hand the trophy to the champions in “style” and they had been working hard on a lot of things to hold a unique ceremony.

Meanwhile after losing their case both at Botswana Premier League and BFA Disciplinary Committees, Letlapeng have shown the intention to appeal their case to the National Appeals Board concerning Centre Chiefs’ use of a defaulter.

Letlapeng chairperson, Sidney Magagane confirmed that they were waiting for the written judgement from BFA and DC for further action. Orapa United have also lodged a complaint to BPL and DC against Mochudi Centre Chiefs for using a ‘defaulter’.
