Nurses Need to Serve With Dignity

Botswana nurses have been called upon to preserve their dignity and fulfill the pledge of service.

Speaking during the nurse’s day and awards ceremony in Palapye recently, the Minister of Health, Ms Dorcas Makgato, said nurses should be proud of their profession and serve the nation diligently.

Minister Makgato said her ministry was progressing well, adding that transformation was imminent and all the changes could bear fruits if we all could play their part.

She reminded them to the pledge of service, which stated the objectives and the obligations of the nursing profession that promoted caring and good health. She encouraged nurses to concentrate in serving the nation and face the challenges that come with the profession.

Ms Makgato said nurses should also bear in mind that “prevention is better than cure” in these regard reducing the burden of diseases haunting the health sector in this country.

Ms Makgato said she was aware of challenges faced by nurses such as the increase in non-communicable diseases, change in diseases pattern which some are infectious and contagious, put pressure to the health system and pressure by the communities they serve, that need more experienced personnel.

She said her ministry was aware of all the challenges they were facing as nurses and had in its strategy of 2016 and beyond committed to shift from curative to preventive, noting that will drive them to an effective care and cost effective service delivery with more of community participation at basic level.

Prevention is seen as effective empowerment of individuals and communities to account to their health.Giving vote of thanks the assistant minister of Education, Mr Moiseraele Goya said nursing profession provides uninterrupted service to humanity from the moment a new life begins with its greatest assets of any organization of its human recourses by continuing to provide quality service.

Mr Goya also said they also bring positive changes to their patients’ lives, demonstrate commitment in providing utmost care and service efficiently and effectively to their client.
