OP Appreciates Sunday Standard Apology

| April 29, 2015

The Office of the President (OP) has noted with appreciation that the Sunday Standard newspaper of April 26, 2015 carried on its front page a retraction and apology for its preposterous story on President Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama.

The statement from the office stated that the Sunday Standard carried a story suggesting that President Khama “co-owns a farm with Mr Thapelo Olopeng in the Mmashoro area, highlighting that there is exploration of natural gas thereat and insinuating that fracking is being done with the tacit knowledge of the owners.”

The Office of the President further said whilst it appreciated efforts made by the newspaper in this regard, perhaps a first in the form of an attempt to rectify the extended imagination in relation to some of the newspaper’s stories, the office hoped that it was an indication of the accountability that was expected and went with the responsibility of carrying public trust in this respect.

The statement also wished to aise the Sunday Standard “to go back and look at some of their stories and act likewise, and that going into the future, the responsibility of informing the public should not be treated in the cavalier manner that had become norm for some of the media houses.
