The chairperson of the protocol and marketing committee of Botswana Games, Steady Basupang, says they will officially launch the 2015 games next month.

Speaking at a meeting of the chef de missions of the 16 districts in Francistown recently, Basupang said the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng, would launch the games.

He added that the games would be held in Francistown from December 5-15. He added that minister Olopeng would also officially open the games on December 6 while the Assistant Minister of Agriculture, who is also Shashe West MP, Fidelis Molao would perform the official closing.

Basupang said the tour of facilities that would be used during the games has been earmarked for September 11.

The games organising committee chairperson, Bobby Gaseitsiwe explained that the games, which started in 2007, were aimed at unearthing talent and enhancing the image of sport by increasing the popularity and awareness of different codes.

“The games also strengthen solidarity within the districts and promote community sport,” Gaseitsiwe said.

He noted that the December games would be used to select athletes for the under-20 Angola Games in 2016.Solomon Dikgang from the Central District appealed to the government to pay teachers their overtime in order for them to continue helping at the games.

However, Gaseitsiwe said authorities were aware of the issue of engaging teachers in sports and expressed hope that by the time the games start such differences would have been resolved.

Francistown mayor, Sylvia Muzila said the games would help sell the city, but lamented that Francistown football teams were not doing well.

She said it was important for teams in the second city to be seen contributing in all sporting codes, especially football.

Meanwhile, Nelson Amanze decried that the GOC reduced the number of teams without consulting districts.
