Red Carpet for SADC Chairperson

| May 19, 2015

The Office of the President has dismissed as untrue reports carried in the Mmegi Monitor of May 18, 2015 alleging that President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama will snub the visiting SADC chairperson who is also president of Zimbabwe Mr Robert Mugabe.

A press release from the Office of the President says Mr Mugabe, who is expected in the country today, will be accorded “all the courtesies for a visiting Head of State and appropriate measures have already been put in place, as was done with his predecessors, to afford president Mugabe audience with President Khama.”

Mr Mugabe, as chairperson of SADC, will be visiting the SADC secretariat to appreciate activities in relation to the organisation, during his tenure as chairperson as well as perform other activities in relation thereto-a practice within the SADC community for chairpersons, the release explains.

The press release faults the media house in question for failing to contact the Office of the President or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to validate their reports before going to print.

“Against this backdrop, we think it is only proper and appropriate that such information is corrected instantly.

We are also greatly disappointed by the limited professionalism demonstrated in pursuit of some of these stories, where principles are put aside for whatever reason or agenda,” the statement says.
