Shoshong Celebrates Culture

| June 9, 2015

It was a busy weekend for the residents of Shoshong and neighbouring villages as multitudes thronged the Shoshong Cultural Festival and Marathon.

Despite the windy and cold weather, people came in large numbers to celebrate culture and participate in the 4-10 km marathon.

Officially opening the event, former chairman of Mahalapye Sub-district, Mr Moatshe Senai, said Shoshong had a rich history and culture that needed to be celebrated and told to the rest of the world.

He applauded the Investment Destination Committee for organising the event, which will ensure that they achieve their objective of bringing investment and job opportunities to their constituency.

He noted that the region had to unite to overcome poverty, HIVAIDS, unemployment and help people with disabilities. He challenged the community to stand up and preserve culture and traditional cuisine.

He related that Shoshong used to be a regional trade hub in the 18th century that was a stop- over for travellers, hunters and missionaries. With a population of over 30 000 people, Shoshong only came second to Cape Town as a trade capital in southern Africa.

For his part, chairman of the committee Mr Samuel Mphoyakgosi said they want to promote the arts, culture, investment and sports in their village. He pointed out that Shoshong is surrounded by hills which have a rich history.

” We are saying bring back Shoshong status, let us be a stop-over for tourists and investors as they progress to other areas of the country like it used to be,” he said. He explained that they intend to host the event annually with the focus on the whole constituency.

He said extensive consultations are ongoing with the leadership and communities to come up with a proper name for the event.

Giving a vote of thanks, Shoshong MP Mr Dikgang Makgalemele said the day was meant for people to come together and appreciate the rich culture and history in their constituency. He said that they wanted to promote sport through the marathon, for which they are planning a hill challenge in November 2015.

He applauded everyone who made the day a success, and expressed gratitude to Letshego Company for sponsoring the event.
