Aviation: NCAA Urges Journalists to Prioritise Accurate Reporting

Abuja: The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has called upon Nigerian journalists to intensify efforts toward accurate reportage of developments within the aviation industry. Mrs Uju Mbamadu, the Assistant General Manager of the Public Relations Department at NCAA, emphasized this during her remarks at a workshop titled ‘The Role of Media on Initiatives and Innovation to Improve Aviation Safety and Regulation.’

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the workshop marked the second edition organized by the NCAA for the Abuja Transport and Aviation Correspondents’ Association (ATACA). Mbamadu highlighted the importance of accurate reporting in maintaining high levels of safety, efficiency, and compliance in the aviation sector. She noted positive changes in aviation news reporting since the first edition of the workshop, which motivated the continued advocacy for accuracy in news writing.

During the workshop, Ms. Chioma Ubibi, the facilitator, elaborated on the NCAA’s operational structure, which comprises several directorates responsible for safety oversight, economic regulation, consumer protection, and security collaboration. Ubibi explained that the NCAA, empowered by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Act of 2022, operates under the Federal Ministry of Aviation but maintains functional and administrative autonomy.

She also advised journalists to be mindful of their headlines to avoid sensationalism and promote intelligent engagement with NCAA’s regulatory actions. The NCAA Media Consultant, Mr Toni Ukachukwu, reiterated the significance of understanding NCAA’s structure to prevent misreporting and panic narratives. He encouraged journalists to view themselves as partners in accurate public communication, emphasizing the multi-dimensional authority of the NCAA, which spans safety, economic regulation, and consumer rights.
