BDF Withdraw From Confederations Cup

BDF XI might face CAF’s wrath following the team’s decision to withdraw from the Confederations Cup.

BDF XI were fixtured to play Young Africans of Tanzania in February. The team’s communications manager, Peo Keatlholetswe said it would be difficult for BDF XI to participate in the cup due to financial constraints.

“We doubt if we will be able to meet the set standards,” she said. CAF, she said, expected the hosting team to accommodate the visitors in a four or five star hotel, pay CAF officials and referees, adding that the money was too much for them given that they were still going to incur travel expenses to Tanzania..

She said the money they were expected to use both home and away, had surpassed their budget, adding they had approached their main sponsor, Botswana Defence Force, but they made it clear, that they also had financial problems.

According to CAF Confederation Cup regulations, in case of withdrawal of a team, its federation would be responsible for the financial and other consequences to be determined by the Organising and Disciplinary Committee of CAF.

The regulations further stated that a withdrawal reported during the preliminary round would be sanctioned with a loss of the entry right as well as a fine of US$5 000.

Apart from the financial sanctions, every club withdrawing from the competition after the establishment of the fixtures would be forbidden from participating in all CAF inter-clubs competitions for the next two editions following its withdrawal. However, Keatlholetswe said they were aware of the consequences of their withdrawal and they would have to accept the punishment.

She said she was aware that their decision might impact negatively or positively on their team “this might demoriliase the players because they fought hard to win Mascom Top 8 knowing they will compete at a higher stage.”
