GABORONE, April 9 — Botswana’s sole coal producer, Morupule Colliery, has sealed supply deals with South Africa and Namibia, its neighbours to the south and west.

The colliery’s marketing manager, Jonathan Vergeer, says that one of the deals is for the supply of coal under the Southern African Power Pool arrangement.

Under its recently finalised expansion, Morupule Colliery has increased its output from about one million tonnes of coal per year to 3.2 million tonnes, although at full capacity its production can reportedly reach four million tonnes per annum.

Vergeer says that the colliery was currently on a 24-hour loading schedule for the markets it has managed to secure.

At present, coal exports from landlocked Botswana are limited by the lack of heavy haulage infrastructure to sea ports.
