JOHANNESBURG, September 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ —

Diacore Gaborone marathon has donated P1 million to 22 charitable organisations. The Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Kitso Mokaila, who is the ambassador of the race, praised the effort put on by Diacore Gaborone Marathon.

“I remember the marathon as Phakalane marathon and it has grown over the years and now recognised as the Diacore marathon” said Mokaila.

The minister appreciated the growth of the race over the years, adding that it had transformed into a commendable race. Minister Mokaila said Diacore had since 2012, invested over P5 million in the race, adding that over P1.8 million was raised, which benefitted more than 44 various charities and special projects.

“We are going through a very tough time with our diamonds, but it is worth mentioning that we are appreciative of the commitment you have shown to the race by continuing being part of us” commended Minister Mokaila.

Diacore Chairman Nir Livnat said “Diacore’s commitment to the people of Botswana is solid, we’re experiencing tough market conditions at present but our view is to a prosperous future.”

Registration for next year’s Diacore Garabone marathon is now open, and next year Diacore expects over 6,000 runners from around the world.

About  Diacore Gaborone Marathon

Diacore Gaborone Marathon, Botswana’s largest running for charity event.

Since title sponsor Diacore adopted the race in 2012 it has grown from 3,000 to well over 5,000 participants with over a million Pula being awarded to over 30 deserving charities by Diacore in conjunction with co-sponsors Stanbic, Mascom and GIA. One of the most notable contributions of the marathon has been the 400,000 Pula donated to the Gaborone Squash Club, which has gone a long way in allowing the club the much needed resources to completely renovate their facilities.

The Diacore Gaborone Marathon has always been a supporter very keen of a holistic approach to national sports and athletics development and the squash club is a perfect testament to this. The relationship is a real world example of synergy between different sporting codes and a shining example of how two initiatives that are geared towards health and wellness can work together to achieve so much more than they could individually.

The marathon also encourages the general public to come out and support the runners on race day as well as share in all the festivities at the Grand Palm.

All proceeds from the Diacore Gaborone Marathon are awarded to charity and as such Diacore and its co-sponsors are proud to support Botswana through sport, education and charity. In 2014 we raised a record breaking P615,000.00, this year we look to do even better than that. Thanks for all runners and sponsors for their continued support.
