Botswana: Duo Wins Poetry Competitions

Oaitse Ontuetse and Phodiso Modira have won President's Day poetry competitions.

Each won P10 000. Oaitse won under the traditional category while Phodiso came tops in the contemporary category.

Although other performers were exciting to watch, Oaitse and Phodiso's performance was more breatthtaking.

Their poems had the cultural essence and told the story of Botswana under the theme: Towards artistic excellence by 2016.

Oaitse said he was stunned to have made it to the finals and scooping first position.

"This is my third appearance in the competitions, I am proud about the way it has helped me grow as a poet as this platform has helped me to start my career and develop as an individual", he said.

Phodiso, who hails from Kanye, said she took part in the competitions in the past, but she did not win adding that it was through sheer determination that she was able to win something this year.

"My poem was centered around the country's journey into the future, from 1966 to the present, the vision and 2016 pillars and how incorporating arts in our economy could boost us as individuals", she said.
