Botswana: Market Day Platform to Share Ideas

Beneficiaries of the poverty eradication programme in leather work, bead work, pottery and machine sewing among others, had the opportunity to market their products at Riverwalk mall over the weekend.

Gaborone City Council had organised a District Market Day for the business people to market their products.

The objectives of the Market Day was to create a platform for exhibitors to showcase their creativity, products and share ideas and create an environment for them to sell their products and market themselves.

The event was also meant to create an opportunity for interaction and feedback from customers.

Meanwhile, the home economics division at the city council had through the market day, wanted to breed the entrepreneurial culture, achieve economic diversification and encourage development of competitive and sustainable economic projects.

The division also wanted to encourage the spirit of self-reliance and competitiveness and also improvement on quality of projects through sharing of experiences.

Speaking at the event, Gaborone South Councilor, James Matlhogojane encouraged exhibitors to work together as business people to market their products, noting that working together could bring better results.

He also said government should consider a market place for such people, adding that the market place would see employment creation for other people.Furthermore, Matlhogojane said the market place would be ideal as when people who would be coming from outside the country and would want certain products, they would be able to know where to find such.

He appealed to government or funders to have application forms that are user friendly when Batswana want to venture into businesses.

One of the exhibitors, Bogadi Mooketsi encouraged fellow business people to work hard and continue doing their best for better results.

She also encouraged them to heed to customers' advises as this would help them grow.

Mooketsi however pleaded with other Batswana who have talent to come out and venture into such businesses as government had availed opportunities for every Motswana to start their own businesses.
