Rakops - Boteti Afro Scouts should make use of government initiatives to better members' lives.

Head of programmes in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture in Boteti, Mr Kagiso Makoba, was speaking during the Boteti Afro Scouts troop's four-day leadership and behavioural change workshop in Rakops recently.

According to him, government had put forward initiatives such as the Youth Development Fund (YDF), Young Farmers Fund (YFF), LIMID and the Gender Affairs Fund to help them start businesses rather than look to government for employment.

Mr Makoba commended the Boteti Afro Scouts for maintaining focus on their mandate of instiling discipline, botho and the spirit of volunteerism among the young.

"I would also like to praise the Afro Scouts for volunteering their time and service to support the Letlhakane Senior School Boot Camp, which is an initiative by the ministry of education. Afro Scouts were providing law and order, which helped in the smooth running of the camp," he said.

For his part, the Boteti Scout Leader, who is also the National Youth Forum Secretary, Mr Kefilwe Boikhutso, stated that the workshop, which focused on out of school members of the scout movement, was meant to equip them with leadership skills.

He cried out to companies and non-governmental organisations to sponsor the scout movement as it keeps the youth out of the streets, away from criminal activities and substance abuse.
