Botswana: Performing Arts Project Launches

Gaborone - The Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Unity Dow has said performing arts had the potential to diversify the country's economy.

Speaking at the official launch of the Performing Arts Programme in Gaborone on Tuesday, the minister said they had realised the role played by arts both in the country's economy and the lives of the people hence the ministry's decision to support the arts.

The project tagged Unleash Your Star Qualities, which is a partnership between the Ministry of Education and Skills Development and Limkokwing University will enrol best 100 candidates selected from auditions conducted around the country and will be credited by the university.

For her part, the director of academic management at Limkokwing University, Onalenna Phambuka noted that the university was aware of the uniqueness and mixture in the diversity of Botswana's culture in the sphere of creativity, innovation, fashion performing arts, film, design and creativity.

"Our creative industry is notoriously robust in content as evidenced from the streets to the contemporary modern productions which hails from but has not been exported and exposed to the international scene," she said.

She said it was important to continue to showcase the best of Botswana's talent and culture.

"Creativity is not about artistry alone, activities that stimulate one's creativity and critical thinking offer prospects of new economic opportunities as they can release untapped potential for economic innovation and enterprise within a nation as knowledge and skills are the country's greatest resource," said Phambuka.

Project coordinator, Mr Socca Moruakgomo said the project embraced all genres of performances including music, dance, drama and poetry.

He noted that the project was formed with the essence to empower young Batswana especially the out of school youth adding that the countrywide auditions would afford them an opportunity to try their luck.
