Selebi Phikwe will be hosting the eighth edition of Dr Kim's Memorial Charity Golf Tournament from 30th to 31st July 2016.

The tournament, which is sponsored by SPEDU at the tune of P150 000, Dr Kim's son, Kina Kim, Hotel Selebi, Soprano Bikers, Letsatsi Renewable Energy and some contributors such as Duma FM, The Voice, Botswana Golf Union has contracted Streethorn Entertainment to coordinate the event.

Soares Katumbela from Streethorn Entertainment and Event Managers said apart from golfers taking part in the competition, the two-day event also includes a youth empowerment workshop, a music concert, a family fun day as well as a ceremony to hand over donations to charity organisations in Selebi Phikwe and surrounding villages.

He said on July 30, there would be a youth workshop on road safety, drug and alcohol abuse.

The workshop will be facilitated by the Soprano Bikers Club, whose members are professional career people, entrepreneurs, businessmen and women from Botswana and South Africa.

He said the objective was to encourage the spirit of "botho" as well as support charitable causes that aim to uplift the livelihoods of disadvantaged members of communities.

He said the music concert would be fun filled with entertainment from ReBatswana Music Ensemble which comprises Botswana's internationally acclaimed musicians such as Lister Boleseng, Nnunu Ramogotsi,

Ndingo Jowa, Banjo Mosele and Lekofi Sesupo. He also said DJ Clearance would add flavour to the concert with his music, adding that admission fee for the concert was P150 and that tickets were available at the Phikwe Golf Club.

He said on the last day of the golf tournament on 31st July, there would be family fun activities and entertainment for children such as a jumping castle, face painting and games.

There will also be a braai and a live broadcast of Streethorn Jazz programme by Katumbela at the golf club.

Meanwhile, Phikwe Golf Club chairperson, Herold Van Zyl said they were ready to host the tournament.

He commended Dr Kim's Charity for bringing the event back to Selebi Phikwe. He said the charity golf tournament was one of the major annual events in the mining town, adding that this year the event would be bigger and better .

He said they expect around 60 golfers to take part in the event, noting that although the date of golf tournament would be on the same day as the Selebi Phikwe marathon, the clash would not have a negative impact on the golf tournament or marathon as people in the mining town would have a chance to run the marathon and later join the fun at the tournament.

He also said people would have the choice of attending the marathon after party at the stadium or attend the jazz concert at the golf club.

Meanwhile, the public relations and communications manager at SPEDU, Keleabetse Molebatsi said her organisation's mandate was to help stimulate and diversify the economy of the Selebi Phikwe region. She said her organisation found it fit to contribute P150 000 to the sporting event to promote tourism and sport in Selebi Phikwe.
