Botswana: Student Appears for Raping Another

Molepolole - A 19 year old student of Mahupu Unified School in Takatokwane village in the Kweneng district yesterday appeared before Molepolole Magistrate Rosemary Khuto charged with a single count of rape.

According to the particulars of the offence the accused Jumanta Barulaganye of Takatokwane on the 24th of January at or near Mahupu Junior School in Takatokwane village had carnal knowledge of a school mate.

When briefing court on the development of the case the state prosecutor Sub inspector Potso Kealeboga of Takatokwane Police Station told the court that police investigations in the matter are still ongoing, adding that the victim is also a student at the same school with the accused.

He further noted that ever since the incident took place the victim has not been attending school as one of the Guidance and Counselling teachers at the school said the victim is still traumatized and for this reason Sub Inspector Kealeboga said she has to undergo counselling as ordered by Magistrate Modise when his co-accused was arraigned last week.

Sub Inspector Kealeboga further applied for the remand of the accused until the 22nd of this month when he will appear with the co-accused in this matter Keaboka Motshabi. He said that is when the issue of bail as applied by the accused will be looked into taking into consideration the social worker's counselling report.
