Buhari’s Death a Loss for Gender Equality, Says Tallen

Abuja: Former Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, has lamented the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a significant loss to Nigerian women and the country's pursuit of gender equality. Tallen, who was part of Buhari's cabinet during his second term, expressed her sentiments in a statement issued in Abuja, noting that his passing deprives the nation of a staunch advocate for women's rights.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tallen emphasized Buhari's commitment to women's political inclusion and gender equality, highlighting his role as a champion for the welfare of women and children. She praised his leadership, which she believes made substantial contributions to empowering women and children through various initiatives during his administration.

Tallen offered her condolences to the Buhari family, particularly his wife, Aisha Buhari, acknowledging the personal and national impact of his death. She praised Buhari's anti-corruption efforts and his dedication to national integrity, describing these as part of his enduring legacy.

Tallen urged Nigerians to reflect on the values Buhari championed, suggesting that these principles will continue to inspire future generations as the nation addresses its developmental challenges. She expressed her hope that Buhari's legacy will be remembered for his integrity and leadership, as well as his strides in advancing women's and children's welfare.

She recounted her experiences working under Buhari, noting his compassion and commitment to building a just society. Tallen highlighted Buhari's historic decision during the COVID-19 pandemic to declare a state of emergency on gender-based violence, a move that reinforced the protection of women and girls.

Under Buhari's leadership, initiatives such as the Nigeria for Women Project and the National Women Economic Empowerment Policy were launched, marking significant progress in women's economic empowerment. Tallen credited Buhari with providing the support necessary to advance the mandate for women and children, remembering him as a leader who listened and acted.

In her statement, Tallen mourned the loss of not just a president but also a father figure and a symbol of disciplined public service. She extended her thoughts and prayers to the Buhari family and all Nigerians who feel the weight of this loss.
