Civil Servants, Engine of National Development – Expert

Abuja: As Nigeria celebrates Civil Service Week, Dr. Hashim Suleiman, an expert in sociology, has urged the government at all levels to ensure that workers enjoy a living wage, highlighting their crucial role as the engine of national development. Suleiman emphasized the importance of providing civil servants with wages that reflect the economic realities, enabling them to dedicate their time and effort to national service without financial distress.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Suleiman stressed the wide-reaching benefits of living wages for both the economy and the overall growth of Nigeria. He argued that a well-compensated civil service workforce plays a significant role in sustainable development, as increased wages circulate back into the economy through spending on essential goods and services. This cycle, Suleiman noted, supports various sectors such as agriculture, industry, and education, thereby fostering a robust and resilient economy.

Suleiman elaborated on the concept of a circular economy, where the spending power of civil servants strengthens the market and supports national development. He pointed out that the immediate expenditures of civil servants, such as food, clothing, and education, drive demand and stimulate economic activity, benefiting the wider community.

Furthermore, Suleiman highlighted the importance of safe working conditions, which encompass both financial and non-financial aspects, such as healthy work environments, efficient transport systems, and comprehensive healthcare benefits. He urged the government to implement schemes that ensure civil servants can work efficiently without worrying about basic needs, thereby enhancing their productivity and the overall effectiveness of government institutions.

In conclusion, Suleiman advised that prioritizing workers’ welfare would result in a healthy and competent workforce, ultimately boosting and strengthening government institutions and the economy. By recognizing the pivotal role of civil servants, Nigeria can make strides toward sustainable development and national progress.
