A police sergeant who shot and injured his 21-year-old stepdaughter on New Year’s day before crashing his Toyota bakkie in a head-on collision with another vehicle used his service rifle to commit the crime.
The 42-year-old officer is reportedly fighting for his life at Gaborone Private Hospital following a series of incidents that culminated in the near fatal injuries. The officer whose name is currently withheld pending a police enquiry is said to have shot the young woman with his service pistol following a feud in the Block 8 suburb of Gaborone where the family resides.
Botswana Police PRO Senior Superintendent Dipheko Motube explained that the gunshot victim was admitted for treatment of serious injuries at Princess Marina hospital while her assailant was in critical condition at Gaborone Private Hospital following injuries sustained in the accident.
“Following the shooting the police officer who was driving a Toyota van was later involved in a near fatal head-on collision with a Nissan Patrol station wagon along the Airport road on the same day,” Motube explained, adding that the female driver of the Nissan and her female passenger were treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.
In a television news item the lady of Caucasian stock said the cop’s vehicle approached her at lightning speed and that she tried in vain to avoid contact.
Motube could not reveal the names of the victims or any further details because investigations into the matter were ongoing.
