Cresta Marakanelo Group of Hotels has been commended for playing a role in the upliftment of the lives of Batswana by donating houses.

The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya, said the organisation’s good gesture of donating houses to the less fortunate in society was a welcome development.

Cresta donated a two and a half house to an elderly, Mrs Thusego Mazabo and her family of 12 grandchildren at Tsetsebjwe on December 9. Cresta donated five houses to date. He said the contribution made towards the President’s Housing Appeal would ensure that the beneficiaries have a roof over their heads and lead dignified lives.

Mr Goya said President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama had stated that no one should live an undignified life as a result of lack of shelter. He said Botswana was working towards achieving Vision 2016 goals and the donation was in line with the attainment of a Vision 2016 pillar of “a compassionate, just and caring nation.”

“Cresta through its Corporate Social Responsibility mandate is participating in alleviating poverty and provision of social security to those in need,” he said.

Mr Goya called on other companies to emulate Cresta and commended those that have so far responded to the President’s Housing Appeal. He said to date, through the Presidents Housing Appeal, 425 houses had been constructed and 75 were still in construction.

Meanwhile, the Cresta Botswana managing director, Mr Tawanda Makaya said as part of the private sector they were mandated to play an active role in the mitigation of poverty.

He said his organisation was determined to uphold its Corporate Social Responsibility policy, adding that Cresta Marakanelo has donated in-surmountable cash and non-cash assets to registered charitable organisations.

Mr Makaya said to date Cresta Marakanelo has donated over P2.5 million to Masiela Trust Fund since its inception in 2001. “This year an amount of P50 000 was donated on May 30,” he said.

They had also donated beddings and toiletries to the Kagisong Society Women’s Shelter in Gaborone, Maun, Camphill in Otse, SOS in Francistown, Tlokweng as well as to Kasane and Bamalete Hospitals.

“We have donated a five roomed house to the less fortunate family in Francistown in 2005 worth P90 000 and a play-ground facility for kids in Mokubilo village in 2006,”he said.

Last year, he said they donated a fully furnished three-roomed house at Kalamare village and one at Sese early this year. Over P120 000 was spent in building and furnishing the Mazambo family house, including fencing the yard and constructing a pit latrine in the yard. The company also donated P2000 for the purchase of clothing for the family, he added.

For her part, Ms Mazabo thanked Cresta Marakanelo Hotels for helping her family by giving it dignity and security. Initially, she said she lived with her 12 grandchildren in a one roomed house.
