Deltas T20 Champs

Northern Deltas are champions of Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) ladies T20 tournament after overpowering Western Sands by eight wickets on November 22.

In a rain interrupted final played at the BCA Oval, the Deltas built their success around some solid bowling as they left their opponents 56 runs all-out in 17.5 overs of the first innings.

Goabilwe Matome claimed three quick wickets inside the first three overs and added another later on, while captain Florence Samanyeka bowled out two batsmen and made a run-out as the Sands batsmen were easily dismissed without making any significant mark on the scoreboard.

In an unconvincing batting display, the Sands’ best batsman was Mimmie Ramafifi who made just 10 runs after facing 25 balls.

Goabilwe, who was elected player of the tournament, then teamed up with Samanyeka in the best partnership of the match as the Deltas made light work of their chase in the second innings.

The duo combined for 44 runs, Samanyeka making 20 and Goabilwe 16 while the others were extras, before the partnership was broken when Olebogeng Batisani bowled out Samanyeka in the sixth over.

Botsogo Mpedi also bowled out Thapelo Modise in the eighth over, but the Deltas managed to close out the match easily after making 58 runs for two wickets in 8.5 overs. They were awarded a trophy and gold medals while runner-ups Sands got silver medals.

The two teams reached the final after finishing the round robin stage in the top two positions. Other teams that competed in the two week tournament were Central Deserts and Southern Rocks.

The tournament was used by the BCA to give female players a platform to play competitive cricket and stake their claim for places in the national team that will be selected soon.
