Lagos: Dr Sandra Nnamani, a public health expert, has urged men on preventive measures and active surveillance to mitigate prostate cancer risks and other health concerns. Nnamani, Assistant General Manager at Anchor HMO International Company Ltd., emphasized the importance of these measures during the CWAY Water Ltd. Men’s Day event held on Friday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland in males that produces seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm. Nnamani identified symptoms of prostate issues including trouble urinating, decreased force in the urine stream, blood in urine and semen, and abdominal pain. In more advanced cases, symptoms may include bone pain, weight loss, and erectile dysfunction. She highlighted old age, black race, family history, obesity, and smoking as risk factors for prostate cancer in men. However, the disease can be managed through active surveillance, which involves regular screenings, scans, and biopsies every one to three years to monitor cancer development and growth.
Nnamani explained that active surveillance is most effective if the cancer is confined to the prostate, is slow-growing, and not causing symptoms. Other treatment options include radiotherapy, immunotherapy, brachytherapy, and prostatectomy. To support prostate cancer prevention, Nnamani urged men to undergo annual health checks provided by their companies in collaboration with Health Maintenance Organisations. She also advised men to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, maintain a healthy weight, and consult their doctors about increased risks of prostate cancer.
Mr Francis Chukwuemezie, Senior Human Resource Manager at Cway Water, stated that the event aimed to raise awareness of men’s health and encourage men to take an active interest in their health outcomes. Chukwuemezie observed that many Nigerian men are preoccupied with providing for their families and often neglect their health in the process. He expressed hope that the event would prompt more men to prioritize their health and take preventive actions before facing serious health issues.
Mr Gordian Azolum, Senior Factory Manager at Cway Water, noted that the company’s inaugural event highlighted the increasing awareness of men’s health, which has not been openly discussed in the past. Azolum stressed the importance of discussing prostate health, as some men might be unaware of their condition due to the absence of symptoms. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to not only workplace safety but also the health safety of its staff.
