Tonota West Farmers Committee recently extended a helping hand to the needy people in the community by donating food stuff.

Speaking at the event, the umbrella farmers committee chairperson, Mr Michael Kaetwa stated that one key solution to the threat of worsening hunger was to increase investment in poor farmers. He said there was still nothing equal to the thrill of seeing a smallholder farmer receiving a new batch of improved seeds.

Mr Kaetwa encouraged all farmers to invest in agriculture as it was the best weapon against hunger and poverty. He also encouraged them to plough and choose the right seeds.

In her welcoming remarks, Ministry of Agriculture crop production officer for the Tonota Sub-district Ms Eunice Madisa appreciated food donations to the less privileged and encouraged farmers to continue with their spirit of giving.

Ms Madisa also encouraged farmers to use those programmes to make significant improvement in food security in their country to feed the nation. Furthermore, she said farmers in the area had last season cultivated more land and urged them to increase and do more on the land cultivation.

Ms Madisa believed that the event is just a beginning of many working relationships that they would undertake in ensuring support of the less privileged in the society. One of the recipients, Ms Omponye Bayani cherished the food donations and said they will use them accordingly.

Ms Bayani noted that it was the will of God to bless them and wished all Tonota West Farmers good yield in this year’s ploughing season.
