FCT Emergency Department Barricades Flood-Prone Slip Road in Abuja

Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has barricaded the slip road connecting Goodluck Jonathan Expressway with Ring Road II at Galadimawa Interchange, Abuja. The acting Director-General of the department, Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed, stated that the move was to prevent vehicular movement due to recurrent flooding on the road.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed explained that the road experiences flooding every rainy season, and the water level on the slip road was already increasing. Barricading the road is considered a proactive measure to prevent loss of life and protect property from flooding.

Heavy floods on the slip road in 2019 resulted in the death of the Director of Finance of the FCT High Court, Mr Tony Okecheme. Mohammed emphasized the decision to close the slip road to vehicular movement due to the rising water level, which poses a significant risk to motorists.

He appealed to residents of the FCT for understanding and urged motorists to use alternative routes. Mohammed also advised residents against driving through flooded areas and encouraged them to wait for water levels to decrease. In the event of a disaster, residents are urged to use the 112 emergency toll-free number.
