Giants Clash in Mascom Top 8 Semis

| January 22, 2015

Last year’s Mascom Top 8 finalists, BDF XI and Township Rollers will this year clash in the semi-finals while Gaborone United will take on Nico United.

Nico United made an impressive run in this year’s cup, which eluded them since start of the competition in the 20112012 season. The Selebi Phikwe giants reached the semis after defeating Mochudi Centre Chiefs 3-1 in a two legged tie.

Majombolo showed that they were capable of challenging for the P1 million title and Gaborone United would not have it easy. Despite eliminating the Kgatleng giants in the quarter finals, Nico are having a bad campaign in the league and they are currently sitting on the 13th spot in the log.

Gaborone United had their ups and downs this season, but they would come into this game full of confidence after a good win against Nico last year in the be Mobile Premier League. GU, which last won the tournament in 2013, will be aiming for another shot at the title.

Moyagoleele were eliminated from the competition at the same stage at the hands of Township Rollers last season. The second semi-finals will renew the rivalry between the two teams which fought it off in the penalty shootout in last season’s finals.

BDF XI, who are the defending champions, would be hoping to make it to the finals for the third time in a row. Matebele who ended their 10-years silverware drought last year will target a second successive cup. BDF XI reached the semis after eliminating Police XI in the quarter finals on an away goal rule.

They are sitting on the fourth spot and six points behind the league leaders Rollers. If they reach the final, BDF would become the first team to reach the final of the Mascom Top 8 for three successive times.

For Township Rollers, the match would be a chance to erase the horrible memory of the penalty shootout loss of last season. Rollers’ dreams to make it a double last year were crushed by Matebele.

Mapalastina enjoyed their best game of the tournament in the 5-0 thrashing of Motlakase Power Dynamos in the second leg of the Mascom Top 8 quarterfinals. Rollers would be favourites when these two meet because they are in a good form so far this season.

They are the current log leaders in the be Mobile Premier League and their striker Jerome Louis is the league top scorer with nine goals. The two teams last met in the league last year and Rollers won the game 1-0 with Segolame Boy’s long range solitary strike.

Despite all the teams’ performances in the league, the Mascom Top 8 Cup will be a different cup altogether. Since the cup’s inception in 20112012 season, the cup had never been won by league winners.

Moreover, no team has successively defended the title hence records will be set and history rewritten.
