GORDHAN ADDED TO CRISIS TEAM TACKLING SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENT PROTESTS

| October 21, 2016

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been added to the ministerial task set up to tackle the university student protest crisis, after being excluded from the team initially announced by President Jacob Zuma last week.

Gordhan will be joining the the expanded task force along with the Ministers of Communication, Human Settlements and Social development, said Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe following the fortnightly Cabinet meeting here Thursday.

At the announcement of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Higher Education, its members comprised only the Police, Defence and State Security Ministers, although one of the its major tasks would be to find a solution to the challenges in higher education, including the matter of funding, as the main focus of the student protests was to back their demands for free tertiary education.

The exclusion of Gordhan from the committee had drawn wide criticism for opposition parties and earlier this week, Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas had told Members of Parliament that he would caution against a security-centric approach to dealing with the student protest movement which has been shutting down campuses across the country in demand of free higher education.
