Hotel Bookings Surge Ahead of Merafhe Funeral

| January 15, 2015

Most hotels and Lodges in Serowe and Palapye were fully booked by Wednesday January 14 ahead of the funeral of the former vice president Lt Gen. Mompati Merafhe slated for Serowe this Saturday January 16. Lt Gen. Merafhe died on January 7.

His body had made a stopover in Mahalapye on January 14 for a brief memorial service before proceeding to Serowe for his final resting place. Usually around this time of the year, Ms Keletso Thembe of Mabogo Lodge in Serowe said business is low as people would be coming from long Christmas holidays where they over spend their income.

She further told BOPA in an interview that their bookings in the previous months of January would range from 34, 26 or even seven per cent full. Mabogo Lodge which has 26 rooms was fully booked.

The same was shared by Honey Moon Lodge general supervisor, Ms Monica Morapedi who said that they usually experience truncated bookings during the months of January but the situation was different this month.

“All the 17 rooms of our lodge were fully booked for Friday and that may be attributed to the Saturday funeral Lt Gen. Merafhe,” she quipped. Ms Margaret Chiba of Serowe Hotel said they regularly depend on government workshop in their hospitality business but this week all their 16 rooms were booked.

In Palapye, Ms Keitumetse Kagiso of Cresta Botsalo Hotel said their 51 rooms were fully booked for Friday, a situation which was rare in January. Her sentiments were shared by Ms Masego Gobonwang of Tapinda Lodge as all their eight rooms were fully booked.

Majestic Five and Palapye Hotel were not fully booked by Wednesday but the management was expecting to receive late bookings either today or Friday. We are so far 60 per cent booked, said Ms Betty Kaisara of Palapye Hotel adding that business was normal.

However, front line supervisor of Majestic Five Hotel said they were 78 per cent full but they too were expecting to be fully booked for Friday. Mr Gorata Lebang said January to March were usually quite months in their industry. The hotel has 168 rooms.
