Rhumba star from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kanda Bongo Man, will give Maun revelers a treat at Trekkers Nite club this Friday (December 12).

In an interview recently, Gilbert ‘PP’ Seagile of Gilbert Promotions said they chose to bring the veteran musician to perform in Maun to promote the village and tourism.

He added that they chose Kanda Bongo Man because Batswana loved his music. PP said the revered artiste will be in Maun to support the launch of Diva Vebrok’s album titled Re mo dilong.

He said upcoming artists such as Maun Based group BCollabo will share the stage with the international star. PP further said Kanda Bongo Man arrived in Gaborone on Monday and will go on a trip to Moremi Game Reserve, which is supported by Africa Excursion Company based in Maun.

Seagile appreciated support shown by the local companies and other local artists who will be performing in Maun, namely Jojo, Jeff Matheatau, Matsieng, Tyte and Tumza. The entrance fee will be P100.

Kanda Bongo Man is also expected to perform in Francistown on December 13, while the show for Gaborone is planned for April 2015. According to an online encyclopedia, Kanda Bongo Man is known for the structural changes he implemented to soukous music.

His form of soukous is believed to have given birth to the Kwasa Kwasa dance rhythm where the hips move back and forth while the hands move to follow the hips.

It further stated that Kanda Bongo Man moved to Paris, France in 1979 for a wider audience but his big breakthrough came in 1981 with the release of Iyole, which he recorded with Orchestre Bella Bella, with Diblo Dibala on lead guitar.

In 1983, Kanda played WOMAD in the UK and his international reputation was born.
