Dikgosi have been urged to remain dedicated to nation building efforts.

Addressing dikgosi during the official opening of members of Ntlo ya Dikgosi orientation workshop in Gaborone on January 20, the Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi aised dikgosi to enhance their leadership qualities through robust understanding of national issues.

Mr Masisi said Ntlo ya Dikgosi remained an important institution as enshrined in the constitution of the country. He added that dikgosi’s voice was important in stimulating and promoting cultural expression and unity. The Vice President said dikgosi, as custodians of culture and hope for the future, should continue efforts of reviving the country’s diverse cultures.

He said they should also note that some tribes had already done so through mephato, bogwera, bojale and dikgafela. He added that some had written and sang traditional songs.

The Vice President also noted that Ntlo ya Dikgosi represented an important institution in the evolution of Botswana’s diverse cultures and traditional values that gave worth and dignity to nationhood.

Mr Masisi also added that another important role of Ntlo ya Dikgosi was to aice Parliament on cultural issues. He reminded Ntlo ya Dikgosi on its role to discuss any matter within the executive or legislative authority, which it considered desirable in the interest of the different tribes it represented.

Mr Masisi also told dikgosi that they were free to make presentations to the President.

The four-day orientation workshop is aimed at helping members of Ntlo ya Dikgosi to gain knowledge on the rules and regulations governing the conduct of proceedings as well as the role and responsibilities of the house .
