Kgosi Puso Gaborone of Batlokwa and Tshipe Tshipe of Mahalapye region have been re-elected to their positions of chairperson and deputy chairperson of Ntlo ya Dikgosi.
The duo retained their positions unopposed in an election that took place this morning, Monday January 27.
This year marks Kgosi Puso’s fifth term as chairperson of Ntlo ya Dikgosi. He was first elected in 2009, taking over from the late Kgosi Seepapitso IV.
In his remarks, Gaborone said they are concerned about out dated laws that govern the house, adding that the laws are not at par with the developments taking place, hence there is need to change them to enable the house to grow.
“We have made a proposal to the Office of the President for our constitution to be changed,” he said.
Gaborone pointed out that they are also concerned by the annual election of the Chairperson and Deputy, and they wish that the two can be elected for a two years term or even five years to enable them to carry out their duties effectively.
“The time has come to give this house its rightful stand. That transformation will enable growth.”
Gaborone said they aim to raise the status of the house so that it is able to play its role in the country.
Prior to the meeting, Kgosi Puso said members of Ntlo ya Dikgosi attended a weeklong training in strategic planning at the Botswana National Productivity Centre aimed at empowering them. With the knowledge they acquired Gaborone said they are setting the mission and vision of the house. They are also on their way of developing a strategy map.
The strategy will be aimed at improving the state of chiefs, excellence, preservation of culture and improve the image of the house.
