Khama Comforts Merafhe Family

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has conveyed condolences to the family of the late former vice president Lt Gen. Mompati Merafhe.

The President’s message to the family says, “on behalf of the Government and people of Botswana, my family and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to convey to you, the children and the bereaved family our heartfelt condolences and sympathies following this massive loss of His Honour Lt Gen. Mompati S. Merafhe.”

He described the passing on of Lt Gen. Merafhe as not only a loss to the Merafhe family, but to the nation of Botswana and the world as a whole.

The former vice president had an illustrious career spanning from the police, military, political and diplomatic fields, where he distinguished himself through his sterling performance on whatever he set out to do. “He was indeed a great statesman of our times, a citizen of the world and true patriot whose conviction and motivation was national service and the development of his country.”

The President also described Lt Gen. Merafhe as a diligent, industrious, good hearted and selfless individual who was always willing and ready to assist others. “He was also very spirited, humorous, meticulous and most importantly he pursued a principled political journey. It was these same attributes that saw him rise from humble beginnings in the public service to the position of vice president of this Republic.”
